Unilever commits support to Philippine government’s inclusive business growth agenda
Unilever CEO Paul Polman met with President Benigno Aquino III today at Malacañang Palace in Manila to share the company’s commitment to support the inclusive business agenda of the government.
The global business leader, who is known for his passion on the advocacy of sustainable and inclusive growth, shared with President Aquino the strong alignment of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan with the government’s agenda. He reconfirmed Unilever’s intent to work together with the government on long-term multi-year programs with key government agencies that will help enhance the lives of Filipinos in the areas of health and well-being, environment, nutrition and livelihood.
Unilever actively works with government agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Education on multiple programs that has helped it to achieve sustainably-led business growth.
“Our Unilever Sustainable Living Plan is really an expression of the business model of the future where only businesses that create a positive social impact will prosper. We need private, public and civic sectors to collaborate as the major challenges the world faces need all of us to join with a common purpose,” Polman expressed.
During the meeting, Paul Polman also discussed Unilever projects in the areas of setting up of a global shared services center and agri-sourcing that are under close evaluation. Aside from the manufacturing expansion that is currently underway, he spoke about the potential of these projects in creating a positive impact on the ecosystem and in helping to create new livelihoods.
Unilever draws a major part of their turnover from emerging markets and consider Philippines as an important market due to its strong consumption story. “The strong and sustained GDP growth that the country is enjoying together with a vibrant consumer and retail environment has reinforced the Philippines’ role as a significant growth opportunity for Unilever,” he revealed.
“Unilever’s presence and continued commitment to the Philippines is a powerful indication of the increasing improvement of the economy and should set a precedent among other investors on the great potential of our country,” Pres. Aquino added.
Aside from visiting the country as part of his role as Chief Executive Officer of the one of the world’s largest and most highly respected consumer goods companies, Polman also held separate meetings with key stakeholders to discuss appropriate responses to the climate and development challenges that the world is currently facing. Polman is the Chairman of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, is a member of the International Business Council for the World Economic Forum and serves on the Board of the UN Global Compact.
