In commemoration of Earth Day and with the Environment as a key pillar of Unilever’s High Five Week, a tree planting volunteer activity was organized under Unilever GIVES.

Volunteers from Unilever sites in BGC, Paco, and Pasig participated in an exciting day of tree planting and nature trekking at the La Mesa Nature Reserve. Upon arrival, volunteers were briefed by the La Mesa Nature Reserve team on its programs, activities, and the impact of this rehabilitation initiative for the environment.

VP for Sustainable Business and Communications Ed Sunico shared that Unilever volunteers also planted trees in the Nature Reserve over 20 years ago.

Participants were taught how to pot kupang seedlings, a native Philippine tree—highly tolerant of full exposure to the sun which makes it perfect for reforestation projects. The 500 potted seedlings were transferred by the volunteers to a designated nursery. After three months, these seedlings will be ready for planting within the Nature Reserve.

On the same day, a tree planting activity was also held in the Unilever site in Cavite where volunteers planted 32 santan shrubs. With a total of over 244 volunteer hours, 61 Unilever employees from across sites were able to plant 532 seedlings thereby contributing to the Company’s commitment to reduce its carbon footprint.

Unilever’s Get Involved and Enable Sustainability or Unilever GIVES is a program wherein employees and partners are engaged to contribute volunteer hours and expertise on initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Living Plan.
